In 2014, Layla, along with her husband and their four children, was kidnapped by Islamic State militants. “We were a commodity, our bodies to be bought and sold.” Along with her two daughters, she was eventually released from captivity. She has not been able to make contact with her husband in five years. She does not know if he is alive or what has happened to their sons. Layla has the names of her sons and husband tattooed on her arm.
