On August 3, 2014, Dawood was kidnapped by the self-proclaimed Islamic State when its fighters attacked Sinjar. He was forcibly conscripted into the Islamic State militia. Five years later, on August 26, 2019, Dawood was freed and returned to his family. They currently live in the Khanke camp in Duhok.
