SOS HUNGER - help needed nowDONATE

An exceptionally high number of people are at risk of hunger in South Sudan. Due to armed conflict, floods and the effects of a pandemic, 6.5 million people in Africa’s youngest country do not have sufficient food. More than half of the population!

We call for immediate support for the people of South Sudan – a famine has already been declared in 6 regions.

Problems with access to food in South Sudan have been persisting since its independence in 2011, but never before have they been so severe. The ongoing since 2013 armed conflict has led to hundreds of thousands of deaths and 4 million people were forced to flee, abandoning their homes and crops. However, the past year has been particularly harsh, as the country has been devastated by unprecedented floods due to climate change. It is estimated that over a million people were affected by the floods.

The wave destroyed everything in its path, forcing people to flee, deluging fields and killing livestock. Backwater made it impossible to produce food for months and aggravated famine.

The situation was further worsened by the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Mass unemployment, disrupted supply chains, problems with food availability on the market and rising food prices have made it almost impossible for many people to get anything to eat.

In South Sudan, most people work in the informal sector. Because of the pandemic and the floods, the demand for such work has fallen considerably, leaving the population with no livelihood. The lives and health of two million people have been put at risk. We cannot leave them without help!

In South Sudan, we are working, among others, in Akobo County, where we are conducting activities that facilitate access to food and promote proper nutrition, including among the youngest. Our aid has already reached 27,000 people there, including 18,000 children. This is very significant, because according to Save The Children’s latest forecasts, more than a million children were starving in the entire country in 2020 – this number may increase by another 100 thousand in the upcoming months!

We’re ready to increase our efforts to help people who are facing food security. We just need your support to fund the aid.
